Walking Around Memorial Day Weekend 2023 and month recap

Hi everyone! The month of May has passed by way too fast. Now its Memorial Day Weekend and I am at a loss of how fast the month has gone. Life loves to go through some killer roadblocks in my path as it moves right by. The loss of a loved one and loads of overwhelming work has left me bruised. It always seems like life likes to through you some easy pitches and smooth rides but then reminds you of the chaos. Balancing chaos and peace can sometimes feel daunting; I know I have been feeling it, but life does not give us any more than we can handle, almost as if we must learn to walk around life’s chaos. I know it is easier to say that, but it is true, though we do not see or understand it when we are going through turmoil.

The loss of someone close

An individual close to my family was called home at the beginning of May. He was not blood but was considered a grandfather to me. Since he worked as a custodian at a school, he would run into boys who needed extra help to stay out of trouble. So, he would take them under his wing and show them how to cut yards properly. He did this with my dad. To my dad, he was a father figure and helped guide him throughout the years. I remember the many times my parents told him I accomplished something. He was always so proud of me; I still hear him boasting about my accomplishments to everyone he knew and loved. His bragging was his way of showing you he loved and was proud of you.

Going through the funeral and grieving process was difficult; I can only imagine how hard it was on my dad. Losing such an impactful person is challenging; I felt called upon to bake his favorite cookies, my mom’s cookies. Baking these cookies allowed me to help reminisce about beautiful memories and will enable the family to enjoy a freshly baked treat that he loved the most.

He was given a military funeral service due to his service in the U.S. military. These types of funerals are challenging to go through in any circumstance. I, for one, fall even more apart while playing taps and a 21-gun salute. Life has a funny way of coming full circle without us knowing. Loss is a part of life; though it may be hard to walk through, it is a stage we all must walk through.

Pre-Memorial Day adventure

The end of May always brings a sense of remembrance. It is a time to honor and mourn those who died while serving in the U.S. Military. I love to take adventures to honor those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. Why? It is my way of mourning and honoring their sacrifice, simply by enjoying what they fought hard for us to have. Immigrants escaping tyranny in search of freedom are the ones who founded this country. Thanks to these men and women, we can freely enjoy life and its beauty in this country.

This Memorial Day, although an unhappy one, was one that my best friend thought I needed an escape. She was right. I had been in mourning from losing a grandfather figure in my life. I needed an adventure to help gather my thoughts and start to heal. We decided to go to the Lyndon B. Johnson (LBJ) State Park. Enjoying beautiful scenery and good company, what more can anyone ask to help refocus from a busy month? 

What is the Lyndon B. Johnson (LBJ) State Park?
